Hallo-TEEN- how we celebrated Halloween in this crazy not so fun year
Right from when we were kids we were told not to take candy from strangers. But there is that one day of the year when it is perfectly fine to do that! Many of you might not celebrate Halloween, and that's okay, but for those of us that do, we all know what October 31st means: candy, costumes, and fun with friends. Most of us participate in the tradition of going door to door dressed up in costumes to get candy. We start planning months in advance about what costume we want to wear, which friends we will go trick or treating with and dreaming about all the candy we get to collect.
But in 2020, with the COVID- 19 not willing to just go away, Halloween wasnt the same. Although many communities and cities allowed trick or treating with restrictions, families were reluctant, as this meant risking their children getting sick.
So, how did we celebrate Halloween safely?
If you planned on going trick or treating:
-Wore a face mask
-Practiced social distancing
-Used hand sanitizer, as others who were trick or treating could have touched those doorbells
- Instead of ringing doorbells, we had to pick candy from a bowl that many people had left outside
-Tried not to touch too many pieces of candy when you were picking one to take.
-Some of us even 'quarantined' our candy for a few days ( boy, was that tough having to wait a few days to enjoy your candy). Safety first !
This did seem like a lot to do, but what could we do?
If you planned on staying at home:
It wasnt fun for some of us that had to stay indoors and watch the other kids walk around the neighborhood. Only if 2020 were like any normal year ....
Well, for those that stayed home, they had to come up with creative alternatives to have fun on Halloween, such as
-Wore costumes at home and video chat with your friends while eating candy and played Halloween trivia games virtually.
- Some parents placed a small bowl of candy in every room of the house and kids wore their costumes at home and did a scavenger hunt instead of going door to door
-Some people had a costume contest with their families
-People decorated their homes with more detail than other years
-You could do a candy scavenger hunt after having your parents hide candy clues to the next piece of candy
-Siblings held pumpkin carving contests or made Halloween crafts at home
-Some families made Halloween themed food! (hot dog mummies and marshmallow monsters are some things I made this year)
-People had Halloween movie marathon
-Some people had a spooky makeup contest with their families or with friends (over Zoom calls) > our teacher organized one such Halloween contest over our classroom zoom call(everything is virtual this year ), so we didnt entirely miss out on Halloween fun at school.
- I made a Halloween Kahoot and asked my parents to take it.
One thing is for sure, when life gives you a Pandemic, you end up looking for creative ways to have fun !
